Magpie Phobia

I had a client Julie who was petrified of magpies, especially in the “swooping season”, and it was affecting her enjoyment of walking and cycling in the nearby park. This was causing distress, and inhibiting her from getting close to nature, which is an important part of living for her. She did not appear to be aware of other swooping birds, only magpies.

We tapped on their sharp pointy beaks, and beady eyes and the sound of the swooping wings and the sound of beak on helmut. There was a particular part of the path where the attacks were predominant, and so we tapped through using the Movie Technique.

I was not sure if this had been effective and we wouldn’t really know until she tried it out. She was also becoming distressed at the thought of returning to the place of torment, we tapped on that fear as well.

It wasn’t until she was sitting in the park sometime after the session that she realised she no longer reacted with fear in the presence of magpies. Here is what Julie had to say:

“I went to see Melva mainly because my fears were really starting to affect my every day life. I was terrified of magpies and to go walking with my 3 year old in the pram was a major ordeal.

In the past I have been swooped a number of times. Melva identified the fears and feelings and took me gently through a technique of letting go or dissolving all the intense and negative feelings. I also did the techniques at home to speed up the results. I was surprised even immediately after the session that I didn’t feel anything like when I’d first walked into the room.

Yesterday while sitting in the park my daughter pointed out there was a magpie right beside me and I was able to smile and tell her that that was ok and it just went away, that is a major change for me!”
